Hi,
my logitech 2500 was not working under Skype 2.1.081 and ubuntu 10.04. It works with e.g. cheese or with gstreamer-properties. The problem was the uncompatibility of skype with v4l2 devices. I found there is a wrapper in the file /usr/bin/skype-wrapper that preload the compatibity library. Then I changed the script gstfakevideo, changing 'skype' into 'skype-wrapper'. Now my panel launcher for gstfakevideo starts skype with a working camera and low cpu usage.

@ budmaester:

I just upgraded to Karmic (9.10)

Installing this webcam is far more easy now and no more need to compile and patch kernel modules.

Try the following:

check if you have libv4l installed, if not:

sudo apt-get install libv4l

If image is too dark you will have to set autoexposure to 0, to do this there is a gui called v4l2ucp

sudo apt get install v4l2ucp

Any settings done with this gui are not permanent, even tried as root, but disconnecting webcam and reconnecting it again defaults the autoexposure. Trying to figure out a script to do it at boot time, will post here as soon as I have it.

Install skype and if skype crashes when using video you must start skype with the following command:

LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so skype

You can edit your startup icon with that command.

Good luck!

My E2500 is working witch Cheese on th e desktop. I have no experience with Skype on the desktop. The Test give a green screen with green snow...
I think I have to download the software as listed here.

I use Acer EEE PC 900 with Skype 2.0.0.72 for Skype, but that laptop has a built-in camera in the lid. It works fine.

NOTE....DONT test your e2500 in dark rooms!!, only in full daylight will tell if you have to fiddle with expose or gamma...i was struggling alot with the very dark picture in the skype test window, with my e2500.a lot of the above solution worked, but was still very dark. I always tested at night, but alot of light was on, so i didnt suspect the light to be a problem. For the first time i tested a solution(mediubuntu) in full daylight, and it works like a charm. Another cam(stevinson) also worked "ootb" with the mediubuntu/synaptic skype64 bit solution.

Finally my e2500 works on my 9.10-64bit.No kernel change and no fiddling with expose..JUST instal skype 64bit with mediubuntu repos and synaptic like above..

->
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list \
–output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list &&
sudo apt-get -q update &&
sudo apt-get –yes -q –allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring &&
sudo apt-get -q update

->open synaptic->search skype->install 64bit version(from mediubuntu).If you dont see skype mediubuntu in synaptic maybe you have to apply in "software sources"
...thats it...no need to expose.it works here..
